Definition of an SVHC

Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) are chemical substances that fall into one of the following categories:

  • Substances that are carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction (CMR category 1 or 2)
  • Persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic substances (PBTs)
  • Very persistent and very bioaccumulative substances (vPvB)
  • Substances that are potential endocrine disruptors

The SVHC list matches the substances listed in Annex XIV of the REACH Regulation, which are subject to Authorisation

The main purpose of such a list is to reduce the use of SVHCs and encourage their substitution in products containing concentrations greater than 0.1%.
